Addiction

Addiction/Substance Misuse

Addiction can come in many forms. Our clients come to us with any range of addiction challenges, including alcoholism, misuse of prescriptions, drug abuse, gambling or pornography addiction, or an unhealthy relationship with food or sex. We understand that there are many factors leading to addictive behaviours, and that this may include traumatic childhood experiences, grief, and anxiety.

At Victoria Wellness, we provide treatment for Addiction using a variety of approaches. Clients are able to access individual psychotherapy, including EMDR, as well as an intensive skills-based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy group focusing on problematic behaviour, reframing thought patterns, and managing anger and difficult emotions. We offer a trauma-informed, evidence-based, modified 12-step model.

Our approach to addiction is trauma-informed and has been influenced by the groundbreaking treatment of Canada’s top Addiction expert, Dr. Gabor Mate. As a result, our focus is on understanding the root causal factors of the addiction, as well as exploring the potential connection between exposure to trauma, the development of PTSD symptoms, and addictive behaviours. Our clients experience short-term and long-term success as our treatment approaches combine a skill-based approach, emotional regulation support, and individual psychotherapy centred on evidenced-based neuroplasticity research.
