FAQs

FAQs for Victoria Wellness

Why would I choose to attend a residential treatment centre for 4-6 weeks when I could use all that money for one-on-one sessions and stay at home?

This is exactly the right question you must answer for yourself at this time. We understand what a big financial commitment this is, let alone the demands on the family you are leaving at home. Attending VW provides you with an immersive experience that cannot be replicated at home. Your stay at VW is not a retreat, it is not a spa, and it is not a vacation where you will be pampered. You will, however, be nurtured and supported during the hardest work you’ll ever do.

At VW you will have 5-6 personal one-on-one sessions every week of your stay, a fully integrated team of up to 6 mental health care professional attending to you daily, an in-depth education program of the best and most current evidence-based information available, a daily structure of learning and restorative practices including scheduled meals and down-time, not to mention that everyone in house, staff or your peers, gets it. We understand what you are going through and are there to help support you 24/7 when the going gets tough. Healing is hard work; we will help you stay engaged with yourprocess in many ways with knowledge and skills you didn’t know you needed. We’ll be here, ready when you are!

What Issues do you treat?

At Victoria Wellness we specialize in helping adults who are struggling with depression, anxiety, burn-out, trauma, stress, grief, PTSD, and concurrent disorders as well as mild to moderate personality disorders including borderline, ADHD and others. Our complete staff is trauma-informed. Please contact our client care representative to see if our program is the right fit for you.

What can I expect to learn during an intensive stay?

Good mental health is a life-long journey of attention and maintenance that every person must learn to consistently manage. However, getting on a productive healing journey often needs a focused, clear and intentional start with a structured plan. Your stay at VW will help you learn how to foresee challenges up ahead, will teach you skills and tools to manage those moments with greater ease than before, will help you identify your personal needs, your authentic truth and personal values so that you can learn how to structure your life with the components you need to function better. Consider your 4-6 week stay at VW to be a deep dive jump start to get you on a stable, proven path of rehabilitation to support your on-going commitment to living a better life for yourself and your loved ones. This step can be the opportunity you need to change your life view from dismal and unrelenting to hopeful and self-empowering.

Is my stay covered by OHIP?

Unfortunately no. Victoria Wellness is privately funded. Some of our services may be covered by extended private insurance companies. We are happy to provide an itemized invoice for services provided by registered therapists to submit to your insurance firm for possible partial coverage. We recommend that you get a referral from your family doctor or mental health provider (Psychologist, psychiatrist) prior to attending VW to help you write-off this expense on your taxes. (Ask us for more details)

I want more than 1.5 hours of time/week with my psychotherapist, is that possible?

Yes, it is possible at an added charge, but the real question to ask is if it is necessary. Your stay at VW is focused on building new awareness, new skills, new habits that will begin to re-wire your brain to support you for life. As we begin to make changes in how we live, issues will arise that will disclose to us why we do what we do. Those shifts in awareness require support from a psychotherapist on a weekly basis to get through them successfully. This part of your journey is about healing and preparing your nervous system, brain and body for the continued work ahead, in a stable and fulsome way. Slow, steady, small and consistent steps are what is needed at this point in your journey to heal the overwhelming stress, the burnout, the grief, the avoidance, the depression and overall disappointment you are feeling. Part of your rehabilitation is to restore  confidence in yourself. Through our discovery process and our skill-based learning modules, delivered by the whole team, you will find the strength to continue your healing path.

Am I allowed to leave Victoria Wellness while staying in residence?

After 2 full weeks of stay clients can request a “Therapeutic Leave of Absence” for a lunch or dinner with a visitor, a few hours stay with a close friend or family, or an overnight stay with a close friend or family. Clients create a written plan for a therapeutic leave of absence with their therapist and counsellors. A detail safety plan is developed and agreed upon with very specific parameters. Any other outings from the centre will be with the accompaniment of a staff member and must be pre-approved and planned with the whole in mind.

Am I able to use my cell phone and/or social media?

Clients at VW are permitted to bring their cell phones, laptops and computers with them. All clients must agree to certain in-house regulations and use restrictions. If cellphones use interferes with the client’s success while in program, VW reserves the right to impose further restrictions.

Are phone calls allowed to friends and family? If so, when?

We encourage clients to stay in touch with their family and friends while in treatment. All calls must be held in private, away from other guests and in quiet, respectful tones. We ask that all social calls be conducted on private time that does not interfere with programming or scheduled appointments.

I have scheduled doctor’s appointment, legal appointments and work I must still attend to. Can I still do those things?

Absolutely! We understand that life is busy, challenging and demanding and that it can seem impossible to step out of your daily lives to attend to what seems selfish and private. The staff at VW will work with you to help you keep those important scheduled dates in any way we can. Sometimes we can even help you prepare for them. Many of our clients are self-employed and still must be on call for their team at work. Most days you will have pockets of time where you can attend to your business. If you need it, we can provide a desk in your room. Let us know how we can help.

Am I allowed visitors?

Absolutely! Visiting hours are on Sundays from 1 – 5pm. The number of visitors is unlimited, and you are also able to have your family bring favourite pets as long as they are friendly and on leads.

Can I bring my own pets?

Unfortunately, not. As lovely and as friendly as your pet is, not all guests feel the same way. Other guests may have allergies or issues with pets and all they entail. We do have staff with pets that would be happy to occasionally bring them by for a visit if everyone in house agrees.

How do I get anything I might have forgotten at home?

Amazon, Canada Post, Fed-Ex deliver directly to our door. Upon arrival you will be provided with all delivery contact information.

What if I run out of medication?

We strongly encourage our guests to bring all the medication/supplements they will be requiring during their stay (in sealed bottles). However, if this is not possible for whatever reason, we can provide you with the information for the pharmacy VW deals with to have your prescriptions forwarded through them to seamlessly continue your treatment without interruption.

Is there a place to work out?

Yes! VW has a small but well-equipped gym as well as 4 acres of private grounds to circuit walk.

How many clients reside at the Victoria Wellness at any given time?

We have a maximum of 10-11 guests at any time.

Can special dietary needs be accommodated?

Yes! We accommodate many different dietary needs easily and there are some we can’t. Please speak to our client care representative about your concerns.

What do I need to bring with me?

You will be sent a suggested list of belongings to bring along. But just generally speaking, you will need enough comfy clothes for a week that can be layered for personal warmth, appropriate outdoorwear according to the seasons with at least a couple of footwear changes according to the weather.

I like my snacks and pop, how do I handle that?

VW provides a few help yourself snacks including some cookies, cereals, and fruit etc. including coffee, tea, juice and water but we do not usually carry chips and pop. We suggest you bring those with you or order them to be delivered.

Is there anywhere for me to do laundry?

Yes, the 2 bedroom floors each have a washer and a dryer with a laundry soap dispenser. We also provide drier sheets. However, if you have a favorite fragrance or skin sensitivities you will have to bring your own.

Where is the nearest medical hospital?

The closest hospital is Northumberland Hills Hospital in Cobourg, ON a short 17 minutes away.

What is my next step?

Your next step is to contact one of our client care representatives. They will answer any other questions you may have and also discuss any challenges you feel may still be causing you conflict. After that they will send you a Victoria Wellness Info Booklet, and an intake form and everything else you may need to make an informed decision. We are here to help you feel better!
