Anxiety disorders are the most common of all mental health problems affecting 1 in 10 Canadians.

Anxiety is a natural function of the human body which alerts us to dangers in our environment. However, when we are faced with stressors outside of our coping abilities and the symptoms occur too often and too intense, you may be diagnosed with an Anxiety Disorder. There are 11 different types of anxiety and related disorders: Agoraphobia, Body Focused Repetitive Behaviours, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Health Anxiety, Hoarding Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Panic Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Separation Anxiety, Social Anxiety, and Specific Phobia. More information can be found here.

At Victoria Wellness, we offer a holistic approach to anxiety, treating both the mind and body. The most common treatment is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). At Victoria Wellness, each client attends a minimum of two weekly CBT-focused therapy groups. There are many factors that can cause anxiety disorders from childhood trauma, medical illness, genetics, personality, and life stressors. Regardless of the cause of your anxiety disorder, the variety of treatment modalities and services offered by our clinicians will give you the tools necessary to alleviate your symptoms and recover your life.

Personalized Approaches

Distressing symptoms of anxiety are addressed primarily through group programming where our experts teach clients the skills of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to develop an understanding of how our thoughts are manageable.  As well, clients are taught how thoughts interact with our feelings and behaviours.

Somatic therapies recognize that our bodies contain memories and focuses on engaging the relationship between the body, mind and behaviour. At Victoria Wellness, we integrate somatic (body) therapies, such as restorative yoga, meditation, therapeutic walks, grounding and other movement practices in our work. Clients attend groups on emotional regulation and managing difficult relationships. They build the skills to successfully integrate healthy boundaries, communicate effectively, and live their lives to the fullest.

Dr. Peter Levine, developer of Somatic Experience – “Traumatic symptoms are not caused by the “triggering’ event itself. They stem from the frozen residue of energy that had not been resolved or discharged; this residue remains trapped in the nervous system where it can wreck havoc on our bodies and spirits.”

Meditation is a mental exercise involving deep focus, relaxation and awareness. Meditating helps relieve anxiety by providing a new perspective on traumas and stressful situations. Daily practice benefits include stress reduction, feeling more peaceful, feeling better about ourselves, feeling less judgmental, and improved relationships and creativity, according to a study done by Harvard.
